Click handler is broken with matplotlib>=3.5

Describe the issue

The click handler doesn't seem to have any effect:
The issue can be reproduced using the pixelstitch package following the installation instructions in this issue:

Comienza reproduciendo el fallo del click-handler con el paquete pixelstitch y las versiones clásicas de Notebook y JupyterLab indicadas en la issue. Compara los entornos afectados con matplotlib 3.5–3.9 y verifica que los clics produzcan la interacción esperada en cada entorno compatible.
