Description
We should introduce into the spec common scientific data types, and sensible ways to (de)serialize them.
Start with Numpy arrays (as we've already done this, see link above).
Discussion: What other scientific data types might be useful?

Research direction
Read the linked openflexure_microscope/utilities.py around line 25 to understand the existing NumPy array serialization, then inspect this project's specification and serialization paths. Done means the spec defines a sensible NumPy array representation and supports serialization and deserialization, with the treatment of other scientific data types left as a resolved discussion.
