transition animation does not work in combination with modeBarButtons config enabled

Description
When modeBarButtons is used in the plot config, transitions refuse to animate. This seems like a bug since transitions DO work whilst i.e. using modeBarButtonsToRemove in the config.
Simple example that shows the combination that breaks the transitions:
