Description

Great project! I use the normal map material extensively but would love to be able to render depth as well. This is not possible by just providing a custom matcap so I was wondering if there is another way to do it? I currently use the Python API.

Research direction

The issue mentions the Python API, normal map material, and custom matcap, but names no file, test, or entry point. Start by tracing how materials and depth rendering are exposed through the Python API. Done would require a decided, documented way to render depth alongside the existing material behavior.
