Description

vispy has made a library that solves many of the same issues as ipympl: https://github.com/vispy/jupyter_rfb

Probably good to look over that and maybe learn things. Or more dramatically to start using that library?

Research direction

Start by reviewing the linked vispy/jupyter_rfb repository and comparing its approach with ipympl. The issue does not name files, tests, or a specific change; clarify whether the goal is to learn from jupyter_rfb or adopt it, then define the expected integration and validation before implementation.
