Is defining asset_statements necessary?

I am using [FIDO2 API ](https://developers.google.com/android/reference/com/google/android/gms/fido/fido2/package-summary) according to this https://developers.google.com/identity/fido/android/native-apps#step_2_link_to_assetlinksjson_in_android_app we need to define the "asset_statements" in the Android App, however, my app works with or without defining the asset_statements, so is it necessary to define the asset_statements and what is the purpose of that?
