Using plugin leads to thousands of `.class` files being generated

I've only just installed the plugin but it's been pretty unusable to me because the moment I open a project it then produces thousands of .class files and modifications to classpath files. I don't know what it's doing this based off as I get none of this behavior using IntelliJ IDEA and there doesn't seem to be any documentation of this in the readme, so I have no idea how to disable this.

• JDK version: 1.8
• Visual Studio Code version: 1.26
• Java extension version: 0.28

2. [step 2] Open Java project
