What is the process for updating a blob

I have code that recurses through the tree to find blobs and make updates to the string. What I am not sure of is the process for taking the change that I've made to the blob and commit it back to the repository. Is there a way to make an in-place update? Do I have to create a pull request? Do I need to push the code changes? Is there a simple example of making a update to code and committing the changes to any branch.
