It's possible to store inline matplotlib images in the notebook in the uncompressed SVG format, but it would be nice to be able to use compressed SVG (a.k.a. SVGZ) instead. It appears that matplotlib has support for SVGZ, so perhaps this wouldn't be much work to make possible?
