Cannot auth on WSL (previously fixed issue)

This is the same as #23 which was resolved but it has recently been reintroduced.
When using WSL on Windows, the authentication process times out.

Start by reviewing issue #23 to understand the previous fix, then reproduce the authentication timeout in WSL on Windows. The work is done when authentication completes reliably in the affected WSL setup and the regression is covered by the relevant validation.
