version and --version giving strange error

I'm not sure what I could have done but my application started throwing `Operation is not valid due to the current state of the object.` when `version` or `--version` were called. It was easy to fix by just manually handling the `VersionRequestedError` but I couldnt find the root cause.

Has anyone else had something like this happen?
