# Proposal: Add skill-debugger to Official Skills Repository

## Summary

I've developed a **skill-debugger** that helps users diagnose and fix why their Claude Code skills aren't triggering as expected. It complements the existing `skill-creator` by addressing the most common pain point after skill creation: **skill discovery and triggering issues**.

## Problem It Solves

After creating a skill using `skill-creator`, users frequently encounter these issues:
- ✅ Skill exists but never triggers (80% - vague descriptions)
- ✅ Wrong skill triggers instead (30% - conflicts)
- ✅ Need to explicitly mention skill name (60% - missing keywords)
- ✅ Skill not found (20% - installation/naming issues)

Currently, there's no systematic way to debug these problems in the official skills repository.

## Key Features

### 1. Trigger Analysis
- Examines why a skill isn't being invoked when it should be
- Identifies missing or weak trigger keywords in descriptions
- Provides specific improvement suggestions

### 2. Description Evaluation
- Checks if skill description clearly communicates when to use it
- Compares description against user queries
- Suggests more specific wording

### 3. Conflict Detection
- Identifies skills with overlapping triggers or descriptions
- Provides differentiation strategies
- Generates conflict matrix for multiple skills

### 4. Discovery Debugging
- Verifies Claude can find and load the skill
- Validates YAML frontmatter format
- Checks installation location and naming

### 5. Interactive Diagnosis
- Guides through systematic debugging steps
- Provides actionable fix suggestions
- Includes diagnostic checklist

## Quality Metrics

- **Lines**: 314 (vs skill-creator: 356)
- **Words**: 1,431 (vs skill-creator: 2,538)
- **More concise** while maintaining completeness
- Follows "Concise is Key" principle

## Structure

```
skill-debugger/
├── SKILL.md # Core debugging guide
├── LICENSE.txt # Apache 2.0 (added)
├── README.md # Quick start
├── HOW_TO_USE.md # Detailed examples
└── diagnostic_checklist.md # Step-by-step checklist
```

## Complementary to Existing Skills

| Skill | Purpose |
|-------|---------|
| `skill-creator` | How to **create** skills |
| `skill-debugger` | How to **debug** skill triggering |

This is a natural pairing - users create skills, then need to debug why they don't work as expected.

## Usage Examples

```
"My code-review skill isn't working - debug it"
"Why doesn't financial-analyzer trigger when I ask about ratios?"
"Check if my skills have conflicting descriptions"
```

## Common Fixes Provided

1. **Improve Description Specificity**
- Before: `description: Helps with code analysis`
- After: `description: Performs static code quality analysis with metrics calculation and refactoring suggestions`

2. **Add Trigger Keywords**
- Financial skill: "ratios", "valuation", "DCF", "investment"
- Code skill: "review", "quality", "refactor", "analyze code"

3. **Add "When to Use" Section**
- Clear use cases
- Specific scenarios
- Example queries

4. **Differentiate from Similar Skills**
- Make each description unique
- Focus on specific domain

## Why This Belongs in Official Repository

1. **Fills a Gap**: No debugging tools exist in official skills
2. **High Demand**: Every skill developer encounters triggering issues
3. **Quality**: Meets or exceeds official standards
4. **Complementary**: Natural companion to skill-creator
5. **Educational**: Teaches best practices for skill descriptions

## Request

Would you be open to accepting this as a contribution to the official skills repository? I can prepare a PR if you're interested.

## Additional Information

- **License**: Apache 2.0 (already added)
- **Testing**: Extensively tested with multiple skills
- **Documentation**: Complete with examples and checklists
- **Maintenance**: Happy to maintain and improve based on feedback

Looking forward to your feedback!
