Counting people in the street

With Processing and computer vision, what would be the best way to count / follow people in the street ? Two applications : (1) By placing a camera above the street, I would be able to count how many people is using the street per hour (2) By placing a camera above a football / soccer field, I would be able to follow each player during the match.
