目前标准5.1 短语与章节边界章节中「当外语人名缩写成一个字母时，其后宜使用西文句点，而非中文间隔号，如“比尔·盖茨”、“Ｂ．盖茨”。」只提到选用西文句点，示例中也只使用了全宽西文句点。是否应强调需根据情况考虑使用全宽西文句点和半宽西文句点？
以下图为例，因不同字体的间隔号宽度设计不一，在两者同时出现于一个或多个人名中时，选用与间隔号宽度不一的西文句点会造成一定程度上的视觉混乱。
此外，还有一种可能需要考虑的情况，如下图中思源黑体，部分字体的U+00B7 MIDDLE DOT [·]与U+002E FULL STOP [.]或U+FF0E FULLWIDTH FULL STOP[．]的字符尺寸存在明显差异，也会造成一定程度的视觉混乱。另有如下图，多数字体中U+FF0E FULLWIDTH FULL STOP[．]通常有正常的竖排变体，而U+FF0E FULLWIDTH FULL STOP[．]无竖排变体等问题。
