Running Gradle Tasks using language server commands

Is there a way to run arbitrary Gradle tasks by using the java.execute.workspaceCommand call? We're running into some java issues between needing to run gradle tasks, and the java installation the extension picks up. It would be nice if we could just use the java extension to call gradle tasks. Or if we would need to build our own java extension jar, do you have a guide on how to do that? I tried a few weeks ago but couldn't figure out how to set up the extension plugin build.
