can you support .editorconfig for linting ?

it seems to me linting/formatting only works with .xml file, but can you support maybe .editorconfig as well being the standard out there for all languages, as it seems to me this extension conflicts with vscode editorconfig extension.
e.g. my colleagues exported an xml from a java project, to .editorconfig, but now when i apply the formatting i see it all changing the files ( i would expect it to stay the same), or to be able to "detect" the .editorconfig in the root folder
