Description

Bug report

Bug description:
import doctest
optflag = doctest.NORMALIZE_WHITESPACE|doctest.ELLIPSIS
OC = doctest.OutputChecker()

want = """
AB ... CD
"""
got = """
AB  CD
"""
assert not OC.check_output(want, got, optflag)

This is rather unexpected, since substituting the empty string for ... results in a match.

Research direction

Start at doctest.OutputChecker.check_output and reproduce the supplied example with NORMALIZE_WHITESPACE and ELLIPSIS. Trace how the two flags handle the space around an ellipsis, then verify that the reported AB ... CD versus AB CD case matches as expected and is covered by a regression test.
