Description

Some new aggressive clippy lints about eliding lifetimes showed up in 1.83.

They're not hurting our CI yet, presumably because we're using ubuntu-latest which hasn't incorporated version 1.83 yet.

We should probably set up our CI to use the latest stable Rust instead of ubuntu-latest, and then also fix these new lints.

Research direction

Start by inspecting the repository's CI configuration and running clippy with Rust 1.83 or the latest stable toolchain to identify the lifetime lints. Done means CI uses the latest stable Rust and the newly reported clippy lints are resolved.
