Suggestion

Every time I use the "convert to namespace imports" refactor aka code action, I almost always do a rename afterwards. It would be much more efficient if VS Code / TS automatically prompted me to rename the namespace immediately after the conversion is done, just like how "extract to constant" works.

Checklist

My suggestion meets these guidelines:

  • This wouldn't be a breaking change in existing TypeScript/JavaScript code
  • This wouldn't change the runtime behavior of existing JavaScript code
  • This could be implemented without emitting different JS based on the types of the expressions
  • This isn't a runtime feature (e.g. library functionality, non-ECMAScript syntax with JavaScript output, etc.)
  • This feature would agree with the rest of TypeScript's Design Goals.

Research direction

Start by locating the "convert to namespace imports" code action and compare its behavior with the "extract to constant" refactor's rename prompt. Confirm how the requested prompt should work in VS Code, then verify that conversion immediately offers namespace renaming without changing runtime behavior.
