Description

This is apparently outdated. Synapse does still send many m.room.member events that way, but not all. Should be event['content']['membership'] in all cases.

May also want to review if this is still used in other places.

Research direction

Start by searching the example client and the repository for uses of event['membership']; the issue identifies the expected event path as event['content']['membership']. Review each matching use, including any other locations found, and verify that all membership events are read consistently.
