Could there be an option to output an `.rst` file using the `ipython_directive` to an `.ipynb` ?

I have been using an homegrown solution to have some documentation pages rendered to `.rst` files for inclusion in a larger Sphinx documentation, and to `.ipynb` notebooks (with a link to the notebook file from the Sphinx documentation).

Could there be an option for the `ipython_directive` to allow the rendering of text + cells + renders into an `.ipynb` file?
