Describe your dataset and any specific challenges or blockers you have or anticipate.
Our dataset consists of 6,330 underwater quadrant photographs collected during 2024 to assess benthic cover during the 2023–2024 global coral bleaching event. Sampling was conducted across four bays, at four depths, and under two exposure levels. The images are being processed with the open-source platform [Open Coral AI] (https://www.reef.support/opencoralai) (in collaboration with Reef Support, Netherlands), which applies artificial intelligence for coral segmentation and classification. Key challenges for alignment with Darwin Core include the lack of specialized data management staff and the integration of coral health status as a core variable. As part of this workshop application, I am submitting the data from a single quadrant (image) as an illustrative example.
