Dataset Title

Kelp Blue Ecology

Describe your dataset and any specific challenges or blockers you have or anticipate.

My role is to monitor the marine environment of our kelp farms and surrounding areas to ensure non-negative environmental impact and build a case for improved marine biodiversity. I work with numerous data streams and sampling methods:

  • Netting / microscopy (phyto/zooplankton)
  • Quadrat
  • Sediment sampling
  • Water sample (Surface & subsurface)
  • Spotting
  • Acoustic detection (F-pod)
  • Drone imaging (for kelp biomass determination)
  • Acoustic imaging
  • Dive surveys
  • eDNA

My goal is to set up a data architecture aligned with Darwin Core to enable publishing to OBIS.

Challenges:

  • Running QC using R/python
  • Best way to nest events within events / parent events
  • Using a Media extension to manage image/video data
