Project update does not generate module.gwt.xml with tbroyer mvn plugin

I have a large maven project with lots of modules. Many of them are of type gwt-lib and 2 are gwt-app.
When I try to launch the SDM CodeServer with the eclipse plugin I get errors because the .gwt.xml files are not generated. I need to manually run gwt:generate-module on all the modules before I can start the application properly.
Is this caused by a problem in the pom.xml or is it a problem of the eclipse plugin ?
