Catch exceptions thrown by Executor.execute

direct executor lets RuntimeExceptions pass through the call stack. We need to defend against that in places we would permit direct executor. Even without direct executor, execute can throw with rejected exception, so it is really a case we should handle.

Start by locating the call sites where Executor.execute is used and identify the paths that permit a direct executor. Trace how RuntimeException and rejected-execution exceptions propagate, then verify that those permitted paths handle them without letting them escape unexpectedly.
