Why Python map() is a global function?

Hi, I'm new in Python, and I have learned swift, js before.

quetion

I want to know that why python declare map(), filter() as a global function, not an object method, just like list.map()? it is more common in other languages.

I take a look at <fluent Python > book, it explain why use len(str) but not str.len(), but i can't found why map, filter method is declare in this way, either.

could you tell me why? my appreciate
