DelegateExecution::getCurrentActivityId returns null

During execution of some process, I observe that(randomly) the DelegateExecution::getCurrentActivityId returns null. This happens not all the time but when it happens - NullPointerException is thrown in my code as I rely on the id NOT to be null.
Could you tell me whether this is an issue or I have done something wrong?

My BPMN diagrams are basically some ServiceTasks with Start and End events and some Gateways in them. I do not think that the modelling of the BPMN could be an issue here.
