how to customize help formatting

I'm using this in the context of a chat bot that accepts commands, does something and responds. I would like to do markdown formatting of the helptext. The way I'm doing it now is not very nice, I pulled in the source and started fiddling with the HelpText class. It's very difficult as I don't understand HelpText and SentenceBuilder very well.

Any tips on how to do this properly?
