Support for digits/number in short/longName parameters

Just found out that a parameter like `-1` does not work.

Is it intentional? :)

Start by reproducing the reported behavior with a parameter such as `-1`, then inspect how short and long name parameters are parsed. Determine whether numeric names are intended to be accepted and define the expected behavior before making a change; the issue does not identify specific files or tests.
