Tested in latest master, with a 3.28 Ping1D:
The issue occurs at random. most of the times it works ok. Could it be a lost message or race condition?

Reproduce the issue on latest master with a 3.28 Ping1D, watching the debug panel when the firmware version is missing. Trace how the firmware-version message reaches that panel and determine whether the intermittent failure is a lost message or race condition; done means the version is displayed reliably.
