Extensions: we should allow extensions to report back statuses

this could be done in multiple different ways.

I like the idea of changing register_service to include flags and a text string(or list?) that would pop up on the sidebar as a badge on the extension entry if it needs attention.

Another way is to wait for us to have a centralized notification/status system (Zenoh?)
