Using @RunWith annotation is not always possible since there are other frameworks utilizing the same feature (such as Spring). There seems to be nice support for ant already but Maven although capable of running ant tasks has it's own test plugin called surefire which can natively run both TestNG and JUnit tests. Nowadays it is quite easy to customize the runner since it has lifecycle methods similar to both JUnit and TestNG. I propose that the project would maintain such an extension and make it public in a maven repository.
