Are thread locals strictly necessary?

Hi, thanks for this library, I have a question about it.
I seem to understand that it caches the computation in a thread local, so that you don't need an explicit "initialization step", but assuming
I do have a good initialization phase in my program, I should just do it once and store it in a global variable, right?
