# Error in fcase(Species %like% "set", Petal.Length, Species %like% "vir",  : 
#   Length of output value #2 (50) must either be 1 or match the length of the logical condition (1).

This works fine when fcase does not contain a grouped by column :

setDT(iris)
iris[, `:=`(s2 = copy(Species))]
iris[, .(val = sum(fcase(
           Species %like% "set", Petal.Length, 
           Species %like% "vir", Petal.Width))),
     by = .(s2)]
