Research direction

Start with the linked Stack Overflow self-answer, then trace data.table's handling of .N, j, list/.(), lapply, and by. No repository file or test is named in the issue; done means establishing consistent naming and renaming behavior across the described combinations and adding coverage for them.

Description

consistency

The default name of .N and whether .N needs to be wrapped in list / .() when renaming it, seem to depend on other things put in j (e.g. lapply) and if by is used.

Please refer to my self-answer on SO where this is described further: Do we need to convert single elements of j to a list when the overall result of j is a list anyway?
