Contributor guide
First steps
- Read the whole issue, then the project's contributing guide.

- Open a pull request that references the issue number.
Research direction
Start by inspecting the repository for existing README files, development notes, and pre-commit configuration. Document how contributors set up and run pre-commit for development, including the commands already supported by the repository; done means a newcomer can follow the README without searching elsewhere.
