add timing to and improve dbcrash extended test

re #1298

the number of iterations in the dbcrash test have been reduced but it still takes 6 hours to run.

add some timing information to the test in order to establish what is taking so long, and improve the test to run faster.

for reference: the upstream version of this test takes about 45 mins on my laptop
