Battery Automatically Discharges While Plugged In (Without User Configuration Changes)

MacBook Model: MacBook Pro 16-inch (2024) with M4 Max
macOS Version: macOS Tahoe 26.2
Charger Model: Apple USB-C Power Adapter (external) + External Monitor with USB-C charging passthrough
Charging Cable: USB-C (Apple official + Third-party monitor cable)
AlDente Pro or AlDente Free: AlDente Pro
AlDente Version: 1.36.3
AlDente Settings Configuration:
Charge Settings
Charge Limit: 80%
Automatic Discharge: Disabled ✓
Sailing Mode: Enabled (Difference: 10% → Lower limit: 70%)
Heat Protection: Enabled (Max Temp: 35°C)
Sleep Behavior Settings (Schlaf-Verhalten):
Disable Sleep until Charge Limit: Disabled ✓ (was previously enabled)
Charge while Sleeping: Enabled ✓
Stop Charging when App Closes: Enabled ✓

Describe the bug
Critical Issue: Battery automatically discharges from 80% to 70% overnight while the MacBook Pro is continuously connected to external power sources, despite:
Automatic Discharge being explicitly disabled
No manual configuration changes made by the user
Sailing Mode being the only active limit-control feature
The discharge occurs consistently every night, reducing battery from 80% to 70% (approximately 10% loss) regardless of:
Which charger is used (Apple USB-C adapter vs. monitor USB-C charging)
Time of day or usage pattern
Whether the system is in sleep mode or active
This causes unexpected battery degradation cycles because the Mac is repeatedly being discharged while actively connected to power—an unintended behavior that contradicts the purpose of Al Dente Pro, which is to minimize battery wear.
To Reproduce
Open Al Dente Pro → Settings → Charge
Configure the following settings:
Set Charge Limit to 80%
Enable Sailing Mode with 10% difference (→ lower limit: 70%)
Ensure Automatic Discharge is Disabled
Open Settings → Sleep Behavior
Ensure "Disable Sleep until Charge Limit" is Disabled
Ensure "Charge while Sleeping" is Enabled
Connect MacBook Pro to external power (USB-C adapter or monitor charging cable)
Allow the battery to charge to 80%
Leave MacBook plugged in overnight (approximately 8 hours)
Check battery percentage in the morning
Expected Result: Battery should remain at 80% (or slightly lower due to natural self-discharge, approximately 1–3%)
Actual Result: Battery has discharged to 70% (10% loss)
Expected Behavior
When a MacBook Pro is continuously connected to external power with Al Dente Pro configured with:
Charge Limit: 80%
Sailing Mode: 70–80%
Automatic Discharge: Disabled
The battery should:
Charge to the specified limit (80%) when below that threshold
Hold the charge at 80% while plugged in
Not initiate any discharge cycles while actively receiving power
Only allow discharge when the device is unplugged and operating on battery power
The Sailing Mode "discharge to 70%" behavior should only activate when the MacBook is unplugged from power, not while it is actively connected to charging.

Key Observations:
No User Changes: The user has not intentionally enabled or changed any settings that would cause automatic discharge while plugged in
Consistent Pattern: The 10% discharge occurs every single night, suggesting automatic background behavior
Multiple Chargers: Issue reproduces with both official Apple charger and third-party monitor USB-C charging
Sailing Mode Interaction: The discharge pattern exactly matches the Sailing Mode range (80% → 70%), suggesting the algorithm is active despite being intended for unplugged operation
Hypothesis:
There may be a bug in the Sailing Mode logic where the discharge algorithm activates based on current battery percentage (80%) being above the lower Sailing Mode threshold (70%), regardless of whether the device is connected to power. The algorithm may not properly check "is device plugged in?" before initiating discharge cycles.
Impact:
Users expecting battery protection are instead experiencing increased battery degradation due to unintended discharge cycles while powered
This contradicts the core value proposition of Al Dente Pro
The issue is invisible to users because "Automatic Discharge" toggle is disabled, making them think discharge is not happening
