fringe alternative for terminal mode

This wonderful emacs mode is unavailable to me as I use a terminal to run emacs. I could use tramp but then I would not get the lsp support I also rely on. Could we not detect the unavailability of the fringe and use an alternative?

Start by reading the Emacs Lisp code in cov that displays coverage data and locating its use of the fringe. Check how terminal-mode availability is detected, then determine an alternative display behavior that preserves coverage visibility; done means coverage can be displayed when the fringe is unavailable.
