How does Android TV work?

I recently bought and yesterday received a [Mi Box](http://www.mi.com/en/mibox/) that is essentially a Android TV device which also supports Cast (I guess most of them do?). It is however unclear how it behaves with the cast API in some minor ways. For instance: Can I see through the API if someone is playing YouTube using the remote? (not using casting)
