Hi @zwimer,
You may have seen the recent discussion on the Python Discourse about the possibility of adding support for Zstandard to the Python standard library for the 3.14 release. In a discussion on naming, zstdlib was a suggestion for the name of the new stdlib module. It was pointed out that your project already exists on PyPI under the name zstdlib.
Modules in the standard library take precedence over any other module installed, so if the stdlib were to use e.g. zstdlib, this project would not be importable under its current name.
I'm opening this issue to ask your thoughts on using the zstdlib name for the standard library. Would you support this idea and donate the name, potentially renaming this project?
Feature freeze for Python 3.14 is in May 2025, so we are hoping to find a resolution to the naming question fairly soon. There are other names being considered, but I thought it was worth getting in touch and asking your thoughts.
