Description

The following sequence fails and then causes follow-on problems:

cd /tmp
rm -f a.pipe
mkfifo a.pipe
exec 9<> a.pipe

The 'exec' fails with:

bash: a.pipe: EDC5121I Invalid argument.

but should work.

Research direction

Reproduce the failure with the /tmp/a.pipe sequence in the issue, especially the exec 9<> a.pipe command, and inspect the shell's exec handling for named pipes. Done means the command succeeds without the reported EDC5121I error or follow-on problems.
