Description

I can see this was discussed in https://github.com/zhanghai/MaterialFiles/issues/634#issuecomment-1003714401 previously.

I've noticed very flaky behavior with smb servers when accessing via Material Files (but not other file explorers). I'm using VLC for playback which pretty much means that the player itself is

  1. Some videos don't open, or take a very long time to open, independent of which video player is chosen.
  2. Some videos can only be watched from start to finish. Any seeking, forward or backwards, will break the streaming.

The issue seems independent of file size, bitrate, codec, or container.

Research direction

Start by reviewing the linked earlier discussion in issue 634 and reproduce the reported behavior with an SMB server and VLC. Compare videos that fail to open or break when seeking with videos that work, then verify that SMB video opening and forward/backward seeking behave reliably across players.
