Improve error messages in parsers

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for api.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

Start by locating the parser code and the configuration entry point for API handling. Determine where an `enable_compression` option belongs and how its default is represented. Done means the option defaults to false and the requested API compression behavior is covered by the relevant tests.
