Add configuration options for export

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for routes.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating the export and route-handling code and the existing configuration definitions; the work is done when an `enable_compression` option defaults to false and enables compression for exported routes, with coverage for both settings.
