Improve api performance

**Feature request**
It would be great to have monitoring for store.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_monitoring` with default `false`.

Start by locating the configuration handling and the API/store entry points related to performance. Define what “monitoring for store” should report and verify that enable_monitoring defaults to false while enabling it provides the agreed production monitoring behavior.
