Support sorting configuration

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for config.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

The issue names no files or tests. Start by locating the configuration loader and existing configuration options, then trace how the setting is consumed. Done means the new enable_compression option defaults to false and the intended compressed-config behavior is covered by an appropriate test; clarify the title's reference to sorting before starting.
