Refactor api for better readability

**Feature request**
It would be great to have compression for helpers.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_compression` with default `false`.

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by locating the helper implementations and configuration parsing, then trace how helper calls are used in production deployments. Done means a default-false enable_compression option controls the requested compression behavior and the relevant tests or checks cover both disabled and enabled cases.
