Consider deprecating old routes API

**Feature request**
It would be great to have timeout for validation.

**Use case**
Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_timeout` with default `false`.

Start by locating configuration handling and validation logic, then determine how the requested timeout should affect production validation and how the default-disabled option should be tested.
