Add unit tests for helpers

It would be great to have backup for parsers.

Many users need this functionality for production deployments.

**Implementation idea**
Add a new config option `enable_backup` with default `false`.

Start by locating the parser, helper, configuration, and unit-test entry points in the repository; the issue does not name specific files.
